In March 2020, the Rayglass Protector range was thrust onto the world stage when they were chosen as chase boats for the 36th America’s Cup. It has been reported that over half a billion international viewers tuned in to see the races - the highest number in history.
This continues an upward trajectory for Protectors, which are quickly becoming one of the world’s most popular high performance vessels. We chatted to Lyndsay Turner Rayglass’s Sales Director to find out more about growing global and domestic demand for the boats.
Since early 2020, there has been a skyrocketing demand for high-end, custom vessels like the Rayglass Protector. Lyndsay says the America’s Cup only added to demand by putting the vessels in front of the masses:
“There’s been lots of enquiry, including superyacht customers and others who have holiday homes around Europe and want a high-performing vessel. I think the America’s Cup really highlighted the class leading performance of the Protector.”
One model that has been particularly popular is the new Rayglass Protector Targa model. It’s no surprise - these are the vessels used by the America’s Cup as well as several other sailing competitions, Customs NZ and Coastguard NZ:
“If you get into trouble out in the water in New Zealand, these are the vessels that are going to come and save you,” Lydnsay said.
“People care more and more about the safety, comfort and capability of their vessels these days, and that’s part of the reason why the Targa has been so popular.”
Long before The America’s Cup caused a spike in global demand for the Rayglass Protector range of vessels, the events of 2020 were increasing domestic demand. Unable to travel, New Zealanders started spending more on high end vessels and exploring their backyards:
“People are boating and adventuring more and they’re spending on boats and high-end toys. The Protector ticks all the boxes, which has made it very popular over 2020/21 in NZ,” Lyndsay said.
The Protector range is known for tough luxury, versatility and reliability, and will perform in all conditions for the most demanding users. Whether you’re fishing, diving, chasing superyachts, tendering or travelling - these vessels can handle it.
Rayglass’s Protector Range are the world’s highest performing RIB boats. And, according to Lyndsay, the boating community’s changing preferences are part of the reason they’re becoming more popular:
“RIBs are becoming more accepted as a style of vessel and the preferences of boaters are changing. They want to be more adventurous, they want to go out deeper, farther and faster while keeping safe. As this trend continues and boaties demand more of their vessels, the Rayglass Protector will only become more popular.”
