Getting your boat ready for winter? Use our handy checklist

The weather is getting colder and the water’s getting a little less inviting. If you’re thinking of packing it in for the season, or just deciding to take a short break, it’s time to get your boat in to shape for winter until spring rolls around again. 

This checklist will help you get started.

Cleaning

Wax and polish fibreglass/wood/stainless steel.

Check the windows and hatches are caulked and clean.

Empty the waste holding tank and rinse thoroughly with fresh water or flush the toilet with freshwater.

Drain and clean the bilge.

Clean out the fridge, freezer and bait storage.

Wash thoroughly with fresh water to remove salt.

Wash/vacuum decks and carpets.

Through washdown of trailer with fresh water to avoid corrosion.

Interiors

Check water hoses and hose clamps for signs of wear.

Clean out all storage compartments.

Turn off all gas valves at the cylinder.

Check for any corrosion.

Engine

Flush with salt-away or a similar product.

Use rust-prevention spray on exposed parts of the motor.

Run fuel down to minimal levels before storing.

Electrics

Disconnect the power.

Clean all electrical connections and terminals.

Inspect, check and repair external outlets.
